Permanent Residency

The Student Visa facilitates entry to Australia for the primary purpose of undertaking full-time registered study. While limited work rights are attached, the fundamental requirement is that the applicant is a genuine temporary entrant who intends to stay in Australia only for the duration of their course.

This visa does not require employer sponsorship. Instead, the applicant must be enrolled in a registered course and be supported by an Australian education provider. There are four key steps that must be completed for a Student Visa application.

Skilled Visa to Permanent
Residency

A Student Visa does not automatically lead to permanent residence. However, after completing studies, graduates may be eligible for:

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

Allows work for 2–6 years depending on qualifications and location.

Skills in Demand Visa

After securing an employer sponsor and meeting salary/occupation requirements.

Permanent Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186)

With qualifying work experience and a sponsoring employer.

Visa Step By Step Process

Step 1: Course Enrolment
The applicant must be enrolled in a CRICOS-registered course (Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students). The course must be a full-time, formal program of study. The education provider must issue a Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for each course the applicant intends to undertake.

Step 2: Financial Capacity
The applicant must demonstrate genuine access to sufficient funds to cover:

  • Course fees for the first year

  • Travel costs to and from Australia

  • Living costs for themselves and any accompanying family members (approximately AUD $24,505 per year for the primary applicant as of 2026)

  • School fees for any dependent children

Step 3: Genuine Student & Welfare Requirements
The applicant must complete a genuine student assessment, demonstrating that their primary intention is to study, not to work or maintain ongoing residence. This includes details of their immigration history, circumstances in their home country, and the value of the proposed course to their future career. Applicants under 18 years of age must also demonstrate approved welfare arrangements.

Step 4: Health & Character
The applicant must meet health requirements, including a medical examination if required. Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) must be purchased for the entire intended stay in Australia. Character requirements include police clearance certificates and a declaration of no substantial criminal record.

Holders of this temporary student visa can work in Australia under strict limitations:

Work Rights (Fortnight Cap)
Student visa holders can work up to 48 hours per fortnight while their course is in session. A fortnight means any period of 14 consecutive days. This work cannot be the primary purpose of the stay in Australia.

Unlimited Work During Scheduled Breaks
There is no limit on work hours during scheduled course breaks, including mid-semester breaks, end-of-year holidays, or other formal vacation periods announced by the education provider.

Family Member Work Rights
Family members (dependants) included on the visa application can also work up to 48 hours per fortnight. If a dependant is a student visa holder studying a master's or doctoral degree, they may have unlimited work rights.
