Can You Apply for a Subclass 186 Direct Entry Visa Without a 482?

Yes. A person can qualify for subclass 186 Direct Entry without first holding a subclass 482 visa. Direct Entry is a separate employer nominated permanent residence pathway.
What does the applicant normally need?
There must be an eligible nomination by an Australian employer. The visa applicant generally must be under 45 when applying, have competent English, meet the relevant occupation and skills requirements and have at least three years of relevant full time skilled employment. Specific exemptions may apply. Health and character requirements also apply.
Is a skills assessment required?
For most Direct Entry applicants, yes. Home Affairs states that the skills assessment must show suitable skills and must have been obtained before the visa application, even if the document is uploaded later. The assessment must be valid for this visa pathway; a provisional assessment obtained for subclass 485 is not a suitable Direct Entry assessment.
Can you apply from overseas?
Direct Entry is not limited to current 482 holders or people already employed in Australia. Other application and grant requirements remain relevant, and the employer nomination must be genuine and eligible.
What should the employer consider?
The business must be actively and lawfully operating, the nominated position must satisfy the criteria and the applicable salary and nomination requirements must be met. A job offer alone is insufficient.
